Along with Ipanema and Copacabana beaches and the statue of Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer), Pão de Açúcar (Sugar Loaf Mountain) is one of the best known visitor destinations in Rio de Janeiro. It is located at the mouth of the massive Guanabara Bay around which the city has grown. Since 1912, there has been a cable car ascent of the of Sugarloaf. The current, glass-sided cars date back to 1972. The ascent is in two stages: the first takes you to the top of Morro da Urca (220 meters, 722 ft) and the second then lifts you to the top of Sugarloaf itself (396 meters, 1300 ft, above sea level). From both stops there are stunning panoramic views of the city and its beaches and, of course, of the statue of Cristo Redentor on top of Corcovado Mountain.
